Drywall screw sizes: gauge, length, and thread charts

A drywall screw is a thin, hardened, bugle-head screw built for one job: pinching gypsum board tight to wood or steel framing without tearing the paper face [4] [8]. Sizes run on three axes that most people conflate. The gauge (#6, #7, #8, #10) is the shank diameter. The length (1 inch to 3 inch) is set by board thickness plus stud penetration. The thread (coarse W-type or fine S-type) is set by the framing material, wood or steel [3] [10]. The one-minute answer

Most residential hanging is 1/2 inch board on wood studs, and the answer for that is a 1-1/4 inch #6 coarse-thread screw, phosphated black, driven with a #2 Phillips [3] [9] [12]. Three rules cover everything else. Length: board thickness plus 5/8 to 3/4 inch of thread into the stud, which is the penetration every source repeats [3] [9] [13]. Thread: coarse for wood, fine for steel [3] [7]. Gauge: #6 is the default; #8 shows up in double-layer and heavy work, and #8 should not be used at all into 20-gauge steel studs because the thicker shank strips them [3] [5].

Drywall screw gauge chart (gauge to diameter, inches and mm)

The gauge number is the screw's diameter, and the drywall industry prints it in both inch-gauge and metric terms. The table below is built from two manufacturer size matrices that agree cell for cell: Sinsun Fastener's drywall screw listings, which pair each metric diameter with its inch equivalent (3.5mm as #6, 3.9mm as #7, 4.2mm as #8, 4.8mm as #10) [1] [2], and TIMCO's technical data sheets, whose coarse and fine thread ranges are built on the same 3.5 / 4.2 / 4.8mm diameters [4] [5]. The inch column uses the standard US screw-gauge diameters (#6 = 0.138 in, #8 = 0.164 in), which are close to but not identical with the metric numbers, a divergence we keep visible rather than rounding away.

Two cautions on this table. First, one widely-copied manufacturer blog (Prince Fastener) publishes a "head diameter" table claiming the head equals the shank diameter per gauge (a #6 head of 3.5mm, and so on). That is self-evidently wrong: a bugle head is roughly twice the shank diameter, and ASTM C1002, the governing standard for gypsum-board screws, requires a head diameter of not less than 0.315 in (8mm) on screws for fastening gypsum board [11]. Real examples: TIMCO's 3.5mm screws carry an 8.25mm head [4], and Senco's #6 x 1-5/8 in lists a 0.32 in head width [9]. Second, a #5 gauge (2.9mm) appears in one maker's torque table [12] but in none of the size matrices above, so it is not treated here as a standard drywall gauge; if a supplier sells you "2.9mm drywall screws," treat them as a light specialty size.

The full length matrices behind the gauges: Sinsun lists fine-thread sizes from 3.5 x 13mm (#6 x 1/2 in) up to 4.8 x 152mm (#10 x 6 in) and coarse-thread over the same diameters [1] [2]; TIMCO's coarse-thread sheet runs 3.5 x 25mm through 4.8 x 150mm with bugle head 8.25mm on the 3.5 and 4.2 gauges [4]; its self-drilling fine-thread sheet runs 3.5 x 25mm to 4.8 x 100mm with a No. 2 drill point rated to 3.0mm thick steel [5]. Metric 25, 32, 41, and 55mm correspond to the inch 1, 1-1/4, 1-5/8, and 2-1/8 in lengths sold in North America [1] [3].

Screw length by drywall thickness and application

Length is not about the board alone. Every source in the table below repeats one rule: the screw must pass the board and embed at least 5/8 inch, practically 3/4 inch, into wood framing (about 3/8 inch into steel) [3] [9] [13]. Lituo, which manufactures the screws, reports that below 5/8 inch embedment pull-out strength drops by roughly 40 percent in their lab tests [3]. Length equals board thickness plus that bite, which is why the ladder steps the way it does.

Where the sources genuinely diverge, the table keeps both values instead of averaging them. BuildToolHQ runs the whole ladder one size longer than everyone else (1-1/4 in for 1/4 and 3/8 in board, 1-5/8 in for standard 1/2 in walls, 1-7/8 to 2 in for 5/8 in Type X) on the reasoning that more margin into the stud never hurts [14]. Zoro's guide calls 1-1/4 in the industry workhorse for 1/2 in board and 1-5/8 in the ceiling specialist for 5/8 in board [9]. On metal studs the same ladder runs shorter, 1 in or 1-1/4 in for 1/2 in board and 1-1/4 in for 5/8 in board, because 3/8 in of steel penetration is the target there [10] [13]; WhatDrillBit's stud-type matrix carries the same metal-stud column and the ceiling-gets-longer rule [15]. Zoro also frames 1-1/4 in on 1/2 in board as about 3/4 in into the stud, the sweet spot that avoids buried electrical wires [9].

A spacing note that travels with the length rule: walls are commonly fastened 16 in on center along studs and ceilings 12 in on center, with screws held at least 3/8 in back from panel edges [14] [13]. Fire-rated (Type X) assemblies specify their own fasteners, spacing, and gauges in the listed assembly; follow that document, which outranks any chart on this page [10].

Coarse thread vs fine thread (W vs S)

The thread decision is the one most charts bury, and it decides whether the screw holds at all. Coarse thread, sold as W-type (drywall to wood), has deep, widely spaced threads that bite wood fiber and pull the board tight; fine thread, S-type (drywall to metal), has closely spaced threads that cut into thin sheet steel without tearing the material out around themselves [3] [7] [10]. The failure modes of the mismatch are specific: coarse thread in a 20-gauge steel stud chews the stud and leaves the screw spinning with zero holding power; fine thread in wood can feel tight when driven but works loose, because the shallow threads never engage enough grain [3] [7].

Steel thickness sorts the fine-thread family further. Standard S-type fine thread with a sharp point is for light-gauge studs, 20 to 25 gauge steel [3] [7]. Once the steel reaches about 20 gauge or heavier, the screw needs a self-drilling version: TIMCO's PSDR sheet puts a No. 2 drill point on the fine thread, rated to drill steel up to 3.0mm thick, with the twin-fine thread doing the holding after the point drills the hole [5]; Albany County Fasteners sells the same idea as Tek-point fine thread for 18 to 25 gauge steel [7]. Thread counts differ by whose table you read, another honest divergence: Senco's #6 coarse lists 8 TPI in one retailer spec [9], BuildToolHQ describes coarse as roughly 6 TPI and fine as roughly 8 TPI [10], and Newport Fasteners gives coarse as 8 to 10 TPI and fine as 45 to 50 TPI [13]. The direction is consistent (fine is several times tighter than coarse) but the exact counts are not standardized across brands, so treat TPI as approximate and buy by W or S designation.

Into wood, no pilot hole is needed: the sharp point and coarse thread are self-piercing by design, which is the entire point of a drywall screw [14] [7]. Black vs zinc: what the coating means

The color is not cosmetic; it is the corrosion spec. Black drywall screws are phosphate coated, a porous dry-to-the-touch finish: it resists rust in dry interior use, cuts driving friction, and its slightly rough surface takes joint compound and primer, which is why the standard drywall-to-wood W screw is black [6] [13]. TIMCO plates its coarse-thread (wood) line in black or yellow phosphate and rates it to withstand 50 hours of salt spray per ASTM B117 [4]; Sinsun rates its black phosphate at 48 to 72 hours salt spray [6].

Zinc plating, clear or yellow, is the marker for the metal-stud line and for damp locations: Senco's DuraSpin fine-thread screws for steel carry zinc [9], and fastener guides are blunt that standard black phosphate is for dry interiors only, with zinc, ceramic, or stainless specified for bathrooms, basements, and anything near pressure-treated lumber [13] [7]. The salt-spray numbers make the tier concrete: phosphate buys dozens of hours of protection, which is plenty behind finished interior walls and not much anywhere wet.

One head-related fact belongs here: the bugle head is shaped to pull itself flush into the paper face without cutting through it, so drywall screws need no countersink [10] [8]. Driving depth is its own skill (a dimple, not a tear; torn face paper can cost most of the holding power [3] [14]). Collated drywall screws (screw guns)

Collated screws are standard drywall screws joined in plastic strips so an auto-feed screw gun (Senco DuraSpin and the tools that take the same strips: TyRex, Makita, Milwaukee, Grabber, Hilti, PAM) can drive them one after another without handling each screw; strips carry 50 screws, and 1,000-count tubs of twenty strips are the common pack [17] [16] [20]. What drywall screws are not for

Drywall screws are case-hardened and brittle: strong in withdrawal, weak in shear, and prone to snapping under lateral load. Guides converge on the same prohibition, no drywall screws for framing, decking, or any structural connection [14] [13].
