Drill torque settings explained

The numbered ring behind a cordless drill's chuck is an adjustable slip clutch, not a torque readout. Setting 4 on one drill is not setting 4 on another, and no manufacturer publishes a table converting the numbers to Newton-meters or inch-pounds. What the numbers give you is a repeatable, adjustable ceiling on how hard the drill twists before the clutch disengages and the chuck stops turning, which is what keeps screws flush instead of buried through your drywall. What the numbers actually mean

Inside the clutch, a spring-loaded pair of plates sits between the motor and the gearbox. When you rotate the collar to a higher number you compress the spring harder, so it takes more rotational resistance before the plates slip. When the resistance at the screw exceeds that setting, the clutch clicks and the chuck stops while the motor keeps spinning. Pro Tool Reviews' clutch guide and the Ronix power tool guide describe the same graduated mechanism: the numbers are relative steps on that spring, calibrated per tool by the manufacturer, not standardized units. Ronix's guide puts it plainly: the numbers calibrate the clutch to slip in a specific torque range, and higher numbers mean more twisting force available before it disengages.

Two consequences follow. First, a setting that sinks a screw flush in your drill will overdrive or underdrive on a different brand, which is why every published chart, including ours below, is a starting point rather than gospel. Second, the click you hear when the screw bottoms out is the clutch doing its job. If the screw is not yet flush when the clicking starts, go up one number and finish it.

The other ring: gears and the drill symbol

The clutch collar has one more position past the highest number: a drill bit symbol. That position bypasses the clutch entirely, sending full torque straight through, because when you are drilling a hole there is no such thing as too much resistance until the bit stalls. You must switch back to a numbered setting before driving screws again; with the clutch bypassed the drill will happily spin a screw head clean off. Pro Tool Reviews and the Ronix guide both flag this as the most common mistake people make with the collar.

The clutch is also not the gear selector. Most cordless drills are two-speed: gear 1 is slow with maximum turning force for large bits and lag screws, gear 2 is fast for small bits and drilling wood. Gear selection is a separate ring or slide switch on top of the tool, usually marked 1 and 2. Use low gear plus a mid clutch number for most driving, and high gear only for small fasteners and drilling.

This procedure is the consensus advice across Pro Tool Reviews, Ronix, and the Sensazioni guide: start low and step up. It takes less time than fishing out a stripped screw.

Clutch settings vs the torque ratings in our dataset

The torque column in our comparison table (1400 in-lbs for the Milwaukee 2904, 1200 for the Hercules 59420, 265 for the Bosch PS31-2A) is a different quantity entirely: it is the drill's peak or max rated torque, the stall point of the motor and gearbox in low gear with the clutch bypassed. The clutch settings are fractions of that maximum, in unknown proportions, which is exactly why nobody can publish a settings-to-Nm chart that works across brands. What the max rating does tell you is how much headroom sits above your highest clutch position: a drill rated at 1200 in-lbs has a lot more reserve for a stalled 1 inch spade bit than one rated at 265 in-lbs. One more distinction while we are being precise: a drill's clutch is a protective depth stop, not a torque wrench. If a job calls for a specific torque value (lug nuts, engine work, critical fasteners), the right tool is a torque wrench or a torque-limiting accessory, not a numbered clutch collar.

Why there is no universal Nm chart

People search for a settings chart in Newton-meters, and the honest answer is that none exists for consumer drills, because the mapping depends on each tool's spring, gearbox, and motor. Tool forums regularly ask for exactly this conversion and the answer is always the same: it is not published.
