Drill press speed chart: RPM by material and bit size
A drill press is a fixed-speed machine. You cannot feather a trigger like on a cordless drill: you get five (or twelve, or sixteen) discrete pulley settings, or a variable-speed dial, and the wrong one either burns the bit or work-hardens the metal under it. This page is the press-side speed chart: recommended RPM by material and bit diameter for wood, mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum, mapped onto the actual pulley steps that benchtop presses ship with. The short answer
- Wood: top pulley (3000 RPM and up) for twist bits under 1/4 in; by 1/2 in you are at 1500 or below; a 1 in twist bit wants 750 to 1000 in softwood and 500 to 750 in hardwood [1] [2].
- Mild steel: about 1200 RPM at 1/4 in, 600 at 1/2 in, 300 at 1 in, with cutting oil [1] [3].
- Stainless steel: roughly half of mild steel and less, with constant feed pressure, or the material work-hardens under the bit [1] [3].
- Aluminum: 3000 RPM at 1/4 in; small bits simply run at spindle maximum, with lubricant to stop chips welding to the flutes [1] [3].
Drill press speed chart: wood
RPM for HSS twist bits on a press, where the work is clamped and the feed is consistent. Two independent chart publishers agree on the shape of these bands [1] [2]; where they differ, the row spans both.

Wood does not announce its speed limit the way metal does, but the failure mode is the same heat. The tell is scorch ringing the hole wall and a darkened cutting edge; maple and cherry burn first [1] [2]. Drill press speed chart: steel, stainless, aluminum
RPM for HSS twist bits, derived from the standard cutting-speed table (mild steel 70 to 90 SFM, stainless 40 to 50, aluminum 200 to 300), which three publishers print consistently [1] [3] [4].

Stainless deserves its own warning, because a drill press makes the mistake easy: set it fast, and the layer of material ahead of the cutting edge work-hardens until a fresh cobalt bit polishes instead of cuts. M2 HSS is spec'd at roughly 12 m/min cutting speed in stainless and M35 cobalt at 18, about 50 percent faster, per Zhonghuan's HSS speed reference [3]; the handheld translation of the same problem, plus oil and chip-color diagnostics, is on how to drill through metal. What your pulleys actually give you
Chart RPM is worthless if your machine cannot reach it, so this table prints the actual speed steps of common benchtop presses. Every row is from the manufacturer or a retailer listing carrying the full step list [5] [6] [7].

Read the wood and steel charts against that table and the gap shows immediately: five-step benchtop presses jump from roughly 600 RPM to 900 or 1100 RPM with nothing between, which overspeeds 5/8 in and larger steel bits and every large hole saw. That gap is what the next section is about.
The speed reducer: when the lowest pulley is still too fast
The chart calls for RPM that benchtop presses cannot reach. Milwaukee's own product data for a 2 in bi-metal hole saw specifies 170 RPM in mild steel, 115 in cast iron, 85 in stainless, and 255 in aluminum [16] [17]; a press whose lowest step is 570 or 750 RPM is running that saw three to four times too fast, which burns teeth instead of cutting. The fix is a jackshaft reducer: an extra pulley shaft bolted between motor and spindle that drops spindle speed by 2:1 to 4:1 and multiplies torque by the same ratio. Rogue Fabrication, which makes reduction kits for belt-driven presses, puts the floor of most benchtop machines at 250 to 600 RPM and sells reductions from 50 to 94 percent [18]. On machinist forums, owners of 15 in floor presses report the same arithmetic from the other side: a 300 RPM minimum is still twice the speed a 2 in hole saw wants in mild steel, and installed jackshaft kits land in the 100 to 150 RPM band [19].
The honest trade-offs, from both of those sources: belt slip becomes the failure mode instead of motor stall, so you cannot crowd the feed; hole saws in thick steel still grab; and an electronic router speed control does not work because press motors are brushless induction. If your work is mostly the low-RPM end, buying a floor press with back gears or a low minimum speed costs less frustration than retrofitting. Changing speeds on a step-pulley press
The routine, repeated by every press manual and speed guide: unplug the machine, release the motor tension lock (usually a lever at the motor mount), move the belt one step at a time on the motor and spindle pulleys, re-tension until the belt deflects slightly but does not squeal under load, and run the press briefly before touching the work [4] [20]. Variable-speed presses skip all of that: the dial moves a spring-loaded splitting pulley while the motor runs, and the better ones put a digital RPM readout next to it [11] [15]. Two habits worth keeping regardless of machine: clamp the workpiece (the press has torque a hand drill does not, and an unclamped part becomes a projectile), and write the step list on a label inside the belt guard, because most manufacturers stopped printing it under the hood [20] [4].
Press or hand drill
The RPM physics do not change between the two machines; the execution does. A press holds the bit perpendicular, clamps the work, and sustains feed at the bottom of the speed range where a cordless drill's low gear is already straining.
